Bienvenidos !

The Island - Setting

Are you in Lanzarote for the first time?

Then you might have the impression of being surrounded by an unreal, barren landscape.

However within this lies the attraction and one of the characteristics of Lanzarote. The Islands shape was formed by a variety of volcanic eruptions.

The heat still simmers below the surface until today. This impressive nature spectacle can still be enjoyed in the Timanfaya National Park.

You will be enchanted by the scenery of the island.

The most famous man in Lanzarots history was the artist César Manrique (born April 24, 1919 in Arrecife ✝ September 25, 1992 in Tahiche). He was responsible for how the Island looks like today.

He was a painter, architect, sculptor and environmentalist. Almost every attraction of the island was created by him or created under his direction in collaboration with other artists.

Thanks to him the mass tourism in Lanzarote is no issue today. As an advocate for his home island he tried every thing to preserve its natural and its cultural identity, therefore the island's government declared him in September 1995, after his tragic death in 1992, posthumously for as "a preferred son" of the island and expressed a great gratitude to the ambition of the artist in this way.

At the same time the island's government committed to continue the way of Manrique’s way of life in the future.

The results of these efforts became visible when Lanzarote was declared as World heritage site by the UNESCO in 1993.
One last request please: Help us to protect this unique reserve and please do respect the references on the island.
